Orlando Auto Insurance Group Encourages Parents to Review a Child’s Car Seats and Family’s Coverage
The recent Child Passenger Safety Week reminds drivers to focus on keeping children safe and secure in car seats. Parents need to review the type of car seat used as their child grows. Kids should ride in the back seat until they are 12 years old, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
“Using the correct car seat, seat belt, and having adequate insurance for all your passengers is the proper way to safeguard your children,” said Orlando auto insurance representative Lee Rogers, of the Florida Insurance Group.
New recommendations for car seats have been issued by NHTSA. These are now according to a child’s age, not just weight or type of restraint used. Rear-facing car seats are best for a child up to three years of age and convertible 3-in-1 car seats accommodate a range of heights and weights. Once a child has outgrown a rear facing seat, he or she can use a front-facing car seat with a harness. This can be perfect for kids from four to seven years old. And when this car seat is too small, they can use a booster seat with a seat belt.
“Seat belts not only save lives, but safety features such as this, air bags, anti-lock brakes, and more also help decrease your Orlando car insurance,” said Rogers.
The NHTSA has a program where parents can register a child seat to see if there are any recall notices. They also list child seat inspection stations and other tips that make buckling up a little one easier. Overall, the NHTSA recommends that kids remain in the back seat as it is safer. Correct use of car seats and enough coverage for bodily injuries, uninsured motorists, and personal injury protection will help to protect a child and a family’s assets should an accident happen.
