Long Lasting Porcelain in the Bathroom
To extend the life of your bathroom, consider using porcelain bathroom tiles. It creates a clean, fresh look.
“Did you know that the average sub-flooring and floor in a house usually only makes it for about 60 years? That’s in optimal conditions. The thing is that the sub-flooring, particularly in the bathroom, will only hold lino or carpet for roughly 10 years because it gets wet so often. It’s actually odd that some contractors put lino or carpet in a bathroom, because both of those materials absorb more water than other materials. The solution? Use porcelain bathroom tiles,” suggested Dean Dupre who runs Champion Tile, a Clearwater Flooring, Tampa Flooring, and tile installation company.
Another thing about porcelain tiles is that their color and design is all the way through the tile itself, not just on the surface, like it is with ceramic tiles. “It’s a personal choice as to what you prefer and what look you are going for; but ideally, porcelain tiles do well in your bathroom,” added Dupre.
Besides, porcelain only has an absorption rate of 0.04% – in other words, really, really low – meaning, the tiles don’t get water damaged. “And another trick is to use glazed tiles for extra protection,” he explained.
Worried that porcelain only comes in white? It doesn’t. “There are multiple colors and designs in this type of tile and you won’t have any trouble finding something that would upgrade your bathroom to the 21st century. Fact is, you can even get porcelain tiles that look like marble or granite and they handle wear and tear really well,” Dupre remarked.
Here’s a tip for those who prefer their homes to be walking on the “greener” side of things. Porcelain tiles happen to be something that is considered to be recyclable simply because they are made with all natural products when they are created. Nice alternative to other materials in a home, but this may not be the tile of choice for everyone.
Many people don’t realize this, but porcelain bathroom tiles are laid differently than others because they need to be tightly snugged together to keep the water absorption rate down. “You’ll love cleaning porcelain, because it only needs warm water and a soft cloth to spiff it up to a nice shine. Mind you, if you choose the glazed tiles, you don’t have to worry about the shine. It always looks good,” observed Dupre, who owns Champion Tile, a Clearwater Flooring, Tampa Flooring, and tile installation company.
